Q : How have you gravitated toward visual art?

A : Visual art was always important to me. From as early as I can remember I wanted to be an artist, so it was less a matter of wanting to do it, as finding a way to make it something I could do for the rest of my life.

Q : What is your favourite Medium to work in?

A : My favorite medium is watercolors. Over the past 20 years I’ve switched my focus from acrylics, to digital, and then to watercolors, which I’ve been working with for about 15 years now. I started out with a more purist approach to painting with the medium, but these days I mix in a lot of other elements, like metal leaf, ink, and heavy relief texture with gessos.

Q : Whats your least favourite color?

A : My least favorite…it swaps around a lot. The thing about my least favorite color, whenever I realize that I don’t like a color, I try to make a point of doing a painting that really focuses on using a lot of that color! Because I feel like I shouldn’t really avoid any color due to personal distaste — every color has emotions that it can evoke, and steering clear of it means I miss out from a whole array of what that color can bring out in viewers. That said, it’s generally the yellow/orange/pink range.

Q : Educated or Self-Taught?

A : I went to University of CA at Berkeley, and got a double degree of computer science and art. I went there for the computer science mainly, and ended up doing art as well because I felt like I just could not be happy without art in my daily existence. However, the art that I studied was very different from what I create now, and so in a way I feel largely self-taught because the more illustrational, representational aspects of my work, and the use of watercolors were all outside of what I studied there.

Q : What is your hope for your work?

A : I hope that people Enjoy and share my work.
